Tuchel Defends Ben White Against England Fan Booing
England manager Thomas Tuchel has called on supporters to cease booing Ben White following the Arsenal defender’s return to the national squad. Tuchel described White as a standout player and insisted that past grievances should be put aside, emphasizing the need for unity and positive reinforcement as the team navigates defensive injury concerns.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has issued a direct appeal to supporters to stop booing Ben White, insisting the Arsenal defender remains a vital and high-quality option for the national team. The comments come as Tuchel seeks to close the chapter on White’s previous absence from international duty and encourage a more supportive atmosphere for his return.
White had made himself unavailable for selection during Gareth Southgate’s tenure, a decision that followed a reported altercation with assistant coach Steve Holland during England’s 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar. This period of unavailability lasted approximately four years until White made his first appearance since the tournament in March of this year.
During that match against Uruguay at Wembley, White came off the bench to score the opening goal in a 1-1 draw. However, despite his contribution on the pitch, he was booed by a section of the crowd for his prior decision to withdraw from the squad. Tuchel addressed this reaction directly after announcing his latest England squad on Friday.
"We were not happy about this," Tuchel said regarding the booing. "We could understand the disappointment of the fans with what happened before but I think this is expressed now and this should be a closed book because I think everyone could also see the investment of Ben, the quality of Ben and how he presented himself in the March camp before the World Cup."
The manager highlighted White’s immediate impact upon his return, noting that while he scored, he also committed a foul that led to England conceding, creating a complex narrative for the player to navigate. "He did excellent, scored for us and then I think we conceded. It was very eventful, not so easy to come back," Tuchel explained. He added that White has consistently displayed "the hunger to come back, the excitement" whenever they speak.
Tuchel identified White as a key figure in the current defensive setup, particularly given the injury issues affecting other players. "He is the standout player for Arsenal in a position where we struggle with injuries somehow and we have a lot of changes," he stated. The manager also noted that the absence of Trevoh Chalobah from the camp provides an opportunity for White to reassert himself, potentially alongside Jarell Quansah, who may be deployed in a hybrid role between full-back and centre-back.
"Every time I see Arsenal, I see a very strong Ben White in this position. He deserves to open a new chapter, he deserves positive feedback from the crowd," Tuchel said. "He is one of our players and we want everyone to be supported. This is what helps the team the most and I think we are there now to write a new chapter with him."
White’s inclusion in the latest squad list places him among a defensive group that includes Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrad Branthwaite, Marc Guehi, Lewis Hall, Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah, and Djed Spence. His presence underscores Tuchel’s intent to integrate players who have previously been outside the national team framework while managing the physical demands of the squad.
The manager’s defense of White marks a clear shift in tone from the previous coaching regime, aiming to normalize White’s status within the Three Lions setup and mitigate the lingering resentment from some fans regarding his past withdrawal.
